MUSEUM ST MAARTEN - A Trip into the past...

Utensils, Tools, Pictures and more...

Some of St Maarten's artifacts and historic material can be found at the St Maarten museum. This is located near the beginning of Philipsburg on Front Street.

Anything relating to the history of the island or nature related questions can be posed at this spot.

There is a great chance that your questions will be answered right there or a suitable resourse will be provided.

In this museum that is part of the Sint Maarten National Heritage, the history, nature and geology of the island is presented to the public.

The display on the Arawaks tells you about the way of life of these Amerindians that originated from the Orinoco Basin in Venezuela and travelled in "piroques" depicted on the left, along the islands of the Lesser Antilles. Written information is complemented with artifacts and tools, clothing and jewelry.

The Plantation period has examples of agricultture, fishery, cattle rasing and the salt industry, together with objects and illustrations depicting the life of planters and enslaved Africans.

The Fort Amsterdam display presents the visitor with excavated artifacts dating from the presence of Dutch, Spanish and English occupation as of July 1631.

Very interesting are the exhibits from our "grandmother's time". They depict how various household chores had to be done in those days.

Not forgetting what it was like to go to school in those days.

The second room in the museum contains exhibits on maritime history; artifacts and ship models such as a piroque, a schooner, a slave ship and the famous 3-masted warship "Proslyte", built in the Netherlands in 1770, that sank in Great Bay in 1801, while saling under British flag.

Other displays in the museum depict the Nature and the Environment, Geology and a collection of dried medicinal herbs.

The museum is an excellent place to get in touch with the Island's past which can be easily traced with the aid of the numerous illustrations displayed at the St Maarten National Heritage foundation.

MUSEUM ST MAARTEN - Let your mind journey back into time as you view some of the actual fire arms used by slave and salt traders.

In addition to the interesting history of the Island, the St Maarten National Heritage Foundation continues on a daily basis to provide information about many topics.

One of the main interest of many adventurers that walk in off the streets is to find out about our walking trails. Unfortunately some of our hikes have been discontinued due to development.

The foundation however, continues to conduct a walk at least once a month.

In an effort to maintain and improve the museum, the foundation gladly accepts donations.
