There are several deep sea fishing charters available off the island of St. Maarten. The waters surrounding the island offer great marlin and tuna fishing. The drop off at La Samanna Resort is the best spot for blackfin, tuna and wahoo. The Marlin Boulevard is a famous spot for marlin. Marlin are the cousin of the swordfish and therefore fast swimmers they can swim up to a speed of 100 metres in four seconds making excellent fish for sports fishermen.

If you are the sporting type and do take your fishing a little more seriously than just dropping in a line, then St. Maarten is the island for you. The island holds periodically big game fishing tournaments, e.g. the Marlin Cup in May, or The Billfish Tournament in June. This will provide you with an excellent opportunity to see if your fishing skills are up to scratch. Whilst competitive, the tournaments will give you a unique chance to meet and socialize with other fishermen from countries all around the world.

Charters usually include tackle, bait, food, and refreshments. They will show you the best spots and run you through the procedures so that by the end of the day you'll feel like a pro.

If fishing isn't your thing then you can accompany your friends/ family on a charter and sit back, take in the views and enjoy the food/ refreshments the charters have on offer. Bareboat charters are also available. The day's catch can include yellowtail, snapper, grouper, and marlin. The charters are suitable for beginners, intermediates and those experienced in fishing.

Charters work on the basis that what you catch is yours to take home so you will have the chance to enjoy the taste of your days catch. It’s the perfect activity for the whole family to enjoy together.

Small Boat Fishing St Maarten...

Of course, if you don't have the desire or inclination to go out into the deeper waters off the island then there is always good small boat fishing that's closer to shore. Again, as with the deep water option there are many operators more than willing to take you and your family out to all the fishing hot spots that surround the island. There is nothing quite like the languid ebb and flow of the ocean to soothe even the most jangled nerves when you take to fishing St Maarten.

Beach and Estuary Fishing St Maarten...

And then there are the beaches, well 36 of them in fact. All you need are a few beach rods, local information on where the fish are biting and the right bait to use to catch them.

Not surprisingly many of the locals know exactly where the best fishing spots are to be found. And, if you can convince them to share their secrets with you they'll tell you exactly where to find the fish, what fish to go fishing for and how to catch them. Fishing on our beautiful island is a much loved activity by us locals.

Apart from fishing off the many beaches on St Maarten there are also many other places round the island where you can drop in line

So, here we have three different options for different budgets and interests. However, as simple as it may sound, there is nothing quite like the joy of landing a fish, be it from a deep sea charter boat, a small boat just off the shore, or off a beach or wharf.
